How can the right learning environment

for young girls change the world?

Updated on April 2021

Education is not a privilege but a fundamental right of every individual. However, most parts of the world still have a long way to go to make this fundamental right accessible to everyone, particularly for the female populace. Young girls still remain deprived of education in many parts of the world.

Reports claim that 95% of the 28.5 million children living in developing countries of sub-Saharan Africa, south and west Asia, and Arab states do not even have access to primary school education. Unfortunately, the situation of girls' education is even worse. In a misogynistic and patriarchal society, people view girls as less competent and deserving than boys. This false belief leads to the deprecation of the very idea of girls' education. Michelle Obama has aptly said, "Investing in girls' education is the very best thing we can do, not just for our daughters and granddaughters, but for their families, their communities, and their countries." Young girls possess the potential to positively change the world and make it a better place for not just themselves but everyone. This feat is only possible when they are provided with the opportunities they deserve and the right learning environment. An appropriate learning environment is quite essential than we anticipate.

Here are a few reasons why the right learning environment can help young girls change the world:

  • When we educate a girl, we educate the whole community.
  • When we offer girls what they deserve – opportunities and the right environment to learn, they give us a whole lot in return. For centuries women have been victims of misogynistic ideas and impositions. When they get the education rights they deserve, they will make sure that further generations do not remain deprived of education. It is rightly said that investing in girls' education is investing in the development of your nation.

  • Increased women rights
  • Educated women know what they are worthy of and work towards making the world a better place for women. When we educate girls, we teach them to help other women who are struggling for an education. Educated women will be more empowered and involved in the policy-making aspects. They can influence discussions, meetings, and decision-making to bring positive societal changes.

  • Better socioeconomic growth
  • Women make approximately half of the world's population, and educating them will surely take society a long way. Educated women have a greater potential to break the chain of poverty and lead a happy and healthy community where both women and men are celebrated.

  • Decreased child marriage rates
  • Believe it or not, child marriage still prevails in Indian and similar countries and is one of the biggest social problems. Sometimes the girl bride can be as young as 6 – 8. But when girls are given the right educational environment, the child marriage rates are sure to decrease. Moreover, our motive is not to reduce but completely diminish the life-ruining practice of child marriage. This dream will only remain a dream until girls are educated.

  • A better living space for everyone
  • We, as a society, will excel only when we create an environment of equal opportunities and rights for both men and women. ducated women are capable of making equivalent contributions to society. When men and women contribute equally to make society better, everybody gets a better and safe space to thrive.

How can we work towards providing the right learning environment for our girls?

Now that we understand the indispensability of girls' education and the role of a right-leaning environment, we should make sure that we do what we can to make it happen. We, as normal citizens, might not be able to spark a huge revolution, but we can surely create a better learning environment for our daughters.

In the current times when education has become virtual, we can provide young girls with online preschool classes, virtual learning programs, online primary classes, and e-learning opportunities. Virtual classrooms' very existence gives us a great opportunity to make e-learning and online classes accessible to the girl child.
